Dr. Deepak Patel is a renowned Consultant Laparoscopic, Endoscopic & General Surgeon practicing in Mumbai with an experience of more than 25 years. He completed his MBBS degree from the University of Bombay. It was followed by pursuing an MS degree in General Surgery from the prestigious Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, Mumbai which has produced many eminent surgeons.

What Is Circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes the extra foreskin from the head of the penis.

It is performed to cure and prevent various medical conditions such as phimosis, paraphimosis, balanitis or balanoposthitis.

Benefits of Circumcision:

  • Reduced risk of urinary tract infections : Circumcised infants are less likely to develop urinary tract infections, especially in the first year of life. UTIs are about 10 times more common in uncircumcised males than circumcised infants. Severe infections early in life can lead to kidney problems later on
  • Better hygiene : It makes it easier to keep the end of the penis clean.
  • Reduced risk of sexually transmitted diseases : Circumcision reduces ( although not eliminates ) the risk of certain sexually transmitted diseases,including HIV. However, although an individual is circumcised, all safe sexual practices still remain an absolute necessity.

Phimosis

The foreskin in some men is very narrow. It cannot be pulled back completely or even partially. This causes lack of hygiene and pain in intercourse and sometimes even difficulty in passing urine.

  • You can easily pull back the skin completely in flaccid state but with difficulty in erect state

Paraphimosis occurs when the foreskin of an uncircumcised male cannot be pulled back over the head of the penis.

Causes

Types of balanitis

How Circumcision Is Done?

In laser circumcision, a laser device is used to cut the skin. The advantages are early recovery and minimal blood loss. The cuts on the skin are more accurate than conventional methods of doing circumcision. Sutures dissolve automatically within a few days....The dressing required is minimum. Number of follow-up required is minimum. This is by far the most modern method of treatment available for circumcision.

There are no obvious side effects of the procedure. However, on has t accept that like any other surgery, circumcision also involves complications related to the procedure.

Stapler circumcision

In anstomat or stapler circumcision, an anstomat or stapler device is used to perform the surgery. Most common second generation ZSR device is used for the procedure. An anstomat or stapler circumcision device is applied over the penis to remove the foreskin....

After the procedure you are left with a ring of small metal clips which fall off automatically within a few days. While the rings are there they may cause some irritation or pain which is easily covered by painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication.

A third generation device which uses a silicone ring is also available, here instead of metal clips, silicone rings are utilized for holding the cut layers of the skin together. After a few days, the silicone ring falls off automatically.

This is one of the newer methods of circumcision. However, it is not as popular as other methods. The main reason is that the time taken for the silicone ring to fall off is many days and it becomes cumbersome to take care of the wound during that time.
